PREDICTIVE MODELLING
PLACE MODELLING FOR
ABORIGINAL COMMUNITIES, ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNERS AND DEVELOPMENT
Turnstone Archaeology has been working to evolve an exciting new
predictive model for eastern Queensland. The process, called
Predictive Landscape and Cultural Environments (PLACE) modelling,
has attracted considerable interest from several Aboriginal
communities and government organisations. The process, partly
using Regional Ecosystems as a basis for site prediction, but also a
wide matrix of matrix of air photography, archaeological,
ethnographical, historical and environmental data bases to
reconstruct Aboriginal landscapes, including some lost under modern
cities and other land use. The model is still being evolved
but has attracted interest from councils, regional planners,
government departments and Aboriginal communities across Queensland.
This approach is valuable for large scale development planning, such
as mines, roads, forestry projects, urban development and
infrastructure corridors, to avoid or minimise impacts to cultural
heritage sites and places.
The process also assists Aboriginal communities in managing country
and protecting their cultural heritage.
