SPECIALIST FIELDS
CONSULTING EXPERIENCE Michael Strong is a professional archaeologist for 14 years and museum director for 28 years, with an MA in Archaeology and Heritage from the University of Leicester. He was formerly a director of a Queensland archaeological company, but set up his own company, Turnstone Archaeology, in 2006 to work more closely with Aboriginal communities. His current research interest is developing an environmental predictive model that has major advantages for Aboriginal communities and environmental planners. Turnstone Archaeology has a strong commitment to ethical involvement and best practice in archaeological research and fieldwork, especially in accepting that Aboriginal people have the right to choose their archaeologist. Michael has worked primarily in southeast Qld and eastern Australia and has recently been invited to work in central and northern Queensland. His major cultural heritage projects include dams, tunnels, highways, mines and power stations. Michael also has a major interest in museums and museum collections, particularly in the keeping of Aboriginal cultural heritage collections made during heritage surveys. He has authored two books on the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology, one of Australia’s leading small museums, where he has been director since 1980, as well as appearing in numerous films, TV interviews, radio broadcasts and newspaper articles. In 1993 Michael was nominated for Queenslander of the Year award for services for the preservation of Aboriginal sites. Among numerous projects, Michael worked on the famous Vindolanda site on the Roman Wall, and also on a Black Death excavation in London and has travelled in the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia and Turkey and Egypt looking at museum practices, medieval festivals and archaeological sites. PROJECTS Turnstone Archaeology (2006-2010) Jagera Daran Pty Ltd for Department of Transport & Main Roads, 2009-2010 Mitigation of a major artefact concentration and occupation site at Ma Ma Creek. The site has recovered thousands of artefacts, ranging in date from mid Holocene to post contact period.
Wakka Wakka (North), 2009-2010 Survey and documentation of a major Aboriginal quarry site during cultural heritage management for the Surat to Gladstone Gas Pipeline.
Jagera Daran Pty Ltd for Investa, 2009 Mapping and identification of a stone arrangement within a proposed housing development.

Jagera Daran Pty Ltd for Department of Defence and THINC Projects, 2009 Cultural heritage survey of an Explosive Ordnance Depot (EOD) at RAAF Base Amberley. The study located 111 sites along the Bremer River, the majority associated with the reduction of chalcedony cobbles. An excavation of two chalcedony cobbles located 500 metres away was undertaken that demonstrated the impact on chalcedony of tracked vehicles, such as tanks, reproducing shatter similar to Aboriginal reduction processes.
Jinibara, 2009 Mapping of a major stone arrangement site in the Brisbane River Valley for the Jinibara Traditional Owners. The stone arrangement consists of a series of stone cairns and lines of stones stretching about 300 metres beside a creek.
Jinibara and Jagera, 2009-2010 Cultural heritage issues associated with the proposed Brisbane Valley RailTrail between Ipswich and Blackbutt.
Jagera Daran Pty Ltd for Toowoomba Pipeline Alliance, 2009 Cultural heritage issues associated with a predictive model for sub surface cultural heritage for the Toowoomba Water pipeline between Wivenhoe and Cressbrook Dam. The project has identified that Cressbrook Gorge was an important trackway to the Darling Downs and located a source of green chert used extensively for lithic finds.
Jagera Daran Pty Ltd for Project Services and Baulderstone, 2008-2010 Cultural heritage issues associated with a large silcrete quarry at the new Gatton Correctional Centre, Spring Creek. The entire quarry was removed prior to construction of a new Women’s Prison. The site has yielded more than 3000 artefacts including exotic stone adzes and backed artefacts, scrapers, prepared cores and flake blank cores. The site was destroyed in the process of construction but with the assistance of major funds from Project Services, a large amount of lithic material was recovered and is currently undergoing analysis.
Jagera Daran Pty Ltd and MTAA, 2008-2010 Major cultural heritage survey of a proposed residential development at Flagstone, near Jimboomba, for the Jagera People #2 and MTAA. Some 111 sites have currently been identified. An extensive program of test pitting has been conducted, revealing excellent sub surface archaeology. This includes the recovery of nearly 1200 artefacts from one test pit alone, together with a fireplace.
Jagera Daran Pty Ltd for Queensland Transport (Main Roads), Origin Alliance and SMEC, 2008-2009 Investigative cultural heritage survey of the southern section of the historical Redbank Rifle Range and excavation of selected cultural heritage sites within the Ipswich Motorway project for the Jagera, Ugarapul and Yuggera Peoples. A number of test pits were excavated prior to construction. One of these recovered a backed point in association with a clay oven. Radio carbon dating undertaken by the University of Waikato, New Zealand, produced a date of around 1700 AD ± 200 years. Over 1000 artefacts have been recovered and are currently undergoing lithic analysis. A post contact site dating to about the 1880s excavated comprised more than 73 shards of black bottle glass overlaying the first stone hearth site reported for the Ipswich area.
Jagera People for Qld Water Infrastructure, 2008-2010 Cultural heritage survey of the proposed dam site and test quarry for the Wyaralong Dam, Teviot Brook, southeast Qld, for the Jagera People. A significant find has been the discovery of a series of magnificent silcrete blades, approximately 75 x 10 mm long located on a knoll above the proposed dam wall. This led to the largest Aboriginal archaeological excavation in Queensland, with the broad area excavation of the entire hilltop. The site recovered more 6800 artefacts. Another test pit find was a series of 75 blades and paper-thin flakes expertly removed from one core reduction in a superb example of stone-smithing skill. A number of blades had been laid out with the ventral side upwards in rows ready for use but never taken away from the site.
